Day Trips From Lagos Portugal by Car: 8 Best Routes

Day Trips From Lagos Portugal by Car: 8 Best Routes

The best way to explore the Western Algarve’s most spectacular coastal features like the sea caves and hill-top castles is to make the most of car hire day trips from Lagos Portugal. On average there are approximately 300 sunny days per year in Lagos and nearly anything worth taking a post card of is within a 45-minute drive. You take your own wheel as you see your way to the “end of the world” for sunset viewing or take the time to sit over coffee in a sleepy fishing village.

In this guide we list the top 8 self drive routes, provide precise driving distances and answer all the driving questions that domestic visitors from the USA, Canada and beyond first ask!

Is a car necessary for day trips in the Algarve?

The answer to that question is short and simple, for the best spots, yes. The city of Lagos can be reached by walking and is well linked by train to Silves and Faro. The west coast, clifftop of the Benagil Cave, peak of the village of Monchique, and the beaches of the wild Costa Vicentina, have little or no public transport. A car (or a private driver) makes a long multi transfer day into a relaxed loop. The routes can also be taken as an unguided trip if you prefer not to drive, as part of our private Algarve tours.

The 8 best day trips from Lagos by car

1. Ponta da Piedade — the cliffs on your doorstep

The signature view of the Algarve is this clump of ochre rock arches and grottoes, situated just a few minutes from town. Take the boardwalk, go down the stairs and head to the water early to avoid the crowds. This is ideally located around the close beaches of Donana and Camilo, the center of our relaxed beach day in Lagos.

2. Sagres & Cabo de São Vicente — the end of the old world

Medieval sailors believed the land ended here. Explore the windsurfing fortress of Sagres and drive across to the lighthouse at the South-West most point of mainland Europe, the Cape St. Vincent. It is the most hiked long drive around Lagos with the most beautiful light in the late afternoon. Pack everything you need, and get the best of your day journey to Sagres, Portugal, by following our suggestions for packing what to bring, or by handing your driver a full-day tour to Sagers.

3. Benagil Cave & Praia da Marinha — the famous “eye”

Starting from the sea, the Benagil sea cave is a cathedral (with a hole in the roof from which the sun can shine), which can be accessed exclusively by boat, kayak or SUP. Walk to near-by Benagil village and then go to Praia da Marinha, which, multiple times voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Cliffs here are linked up to Seven Hanging Valleys Trail which is part of our Algarve coast and wine sightseeing tour.

4. Silves — Moorish castle and river charm

A hike of 35 minutes will bring you to Silves, which was the Moorish capital of the Algarve and was said to be had more than a thousand years ago. Castelo de Silves sits atop of cobbled streets and orange groves, its red-sandstone walls set to orange skies. Find out all of the details of this day trip by reading our guide to Silves tour from Lagos.

5. Monchique & Fóia — the rooftop of the Algarve

Cross the coast to enter the forest of cork and eucalyptus as you climb to Fóia (902 metres), the highest point of the region. On a clear day the view extends the entire length of the Algarve to the Atlantic Ocean. Caldas de Monchique, a spa village, is well worth a visit en route back down.

6. Carvoeiro & Ferragudo — boardwalks and harbours

Ferragudo is a very pretty fishing village across the estuary from Portimão, the boardwalk at Algar Seco on the clifftop of Carvoeiro is easy to reach and family friendly with its sea views. They form a gentle half-day hike, which is good if you don’t feel too keen on the long hike thing.

7. Aljezur & Costa Vicentina — the wild west coast

Visit the natural park of the Costa Vicentina and head north to Aljezur, and to the Atlantic beaches of surfing (beaches) Monte Clérigo, Arrifana and Amoreira for hidden gems, out of sight of tourist masses. The water is rougher and colder, the cliffs wild and untamed, the villages refreshingly quiet. These are points of interest along the coastline of the West Algarve which support our half day tour to the west coast.

8. Faro & Ria Formosa — culture meets lagoon

Algarve’s Old Town is located an hour east, offering the opportunity to discover a walled up Old Town, a bone chapel and a chance to go by boat to the islands of lagoon Ria Formosa. The most “city” day on this list, and a good day to choose on a windy day with coast exposure.

Self-drive rental vs. private tour: which is better?

Both work. It’s a matter of budget, driving experience and how much you want to disconnect.

If you are weighing cost, our private transfer and tour pricing is transparent and charged per vehicle, so larger groups often pay less per person than separate car hire plus extras.

Practical tips for driving in the Algarve

  • Tolls (A22 / Via Verde): The main east–west motorway uses electronic tolls only, with no cash booths. Rental cars usually include a transponder, or you can register a card through the official Via Verde system. Avoid surprise fines by confirming the toll setup at pickup.
  • Parking: Towns like Silves, Sagres, and Carvoeiro have free or cheap car parks just outside the centre. Benagil and Praia da Marinha have free lots that fill fast in summer, so arrive before 10 a.m.
  • Driving difficulty: Roads are modern and well-signed; the A22 and EN125 are easy. Older village lanes are narrow, so a smaller car helps.
  • Best time to go: May, June, September, and early October bring warm weather and thinner crowds. July and August are busiest.
  • Trains as backup: For Silves and Faro, Comboios de Portugal runs budget services if you prefer to skip the car that day.
  • Arriving first: Most visitors land at Faro before reaching Lagos. Our Faro Airport to Lagos transfer guide covers costs and timings so day one starts smoothly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the distance between Sagres and Lagos by car?

The distance is approximately 35 km or approximately 45-50 minutes by EN125 or local roads. The Cape St. Vincent is only a few minutes outside of the town of Sagres.

Do visitors have to be careful when driving in Algarve?

No. Main routes are up to date, well signposted and right-side-of-the-road. The only changes thus far are the electronic tolls on the A22 and on narrow roads within historic centres.

Is it possible to make a day trip to Seville from Lagos?

Yes, but it is long — about 2.5 hours each side of the Spanish border. It can be used as a full day excursion for experienced drivers and a number of travellers prefer to use a private driver to cover the distance.

Is it necessary to use a toll transponder on the Algarve?

Yes for the A22 motorway. Avoid penalties by using the transponder provided at rental car or by registering your plate at Via Verde.
