Although there is an almost ten million passengers passing though the close-by Faro airport in 2025, most of them rush between beaches without taking the time out to enjoy what the Western Algarve has to offer – the slowing down. A well-designed Lagos Portugal relax day is just the opposite. It embraces the golden coast beaches, a relaxed wine tasting and time to simply unwind all in one relaxed day. Written by the local team at Lagos Transfers & Tours (Portuguese travel licence RNAVT 10239), this guide deals with the process of building the day, its expense and when to make the trip. Want it all fixed for you? We make private tours from Lagos from door to door.
What is a Lagos relax day with wine, really?
A relax day is a leisurely coastal trip comprising the dramatic cliffs at Ponta da Piedade, local wine in the Algarve and a “me time” activity like a private massage or a seaside lunch. You don’t have to check the attractions, you build the day around rest. Imagine strolling along the cliffs in the morning, sampling local varietals in the afternoon and enjoying the gold-toned Atlantic at the evening. Enjoyed by couples, small groups and anyone recovering from a hectic travel schedule with scenery without stress.
Your unhurried one-day itinerary
It’s not the distance that counts, but the beat. What this plan doesn’t entail is long trips, as the town Centre is just roughly 2.8 kilometres away from Ponta da Piedade. Here is a sample walk, taxi or walk & talk route with some examples related to the area. If you don’t want to drive all the way to Portugal’s capital, our guide to day trips from Lagos by car shows you eight scenic alternatives for the region.
| Time | Stop | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Praia do Camilo & Praia Dona Ana | A gentle cliff walk down the wooden staircases before crowds arrive |
| Late morning | Ponta da Piedade viewpoints | Photograph the limestone arches, then descend to the bay |
| Lunch | Old town seaside terrace | Fresh cataplana or grilled fish with a chilled Algarve white |
| Afternoon | Vineyard near Lagoa or Silves | Guided tasting of regional reds and whites |
| Golden hour | Clifftop or Meia Praia | Sunset with a final glass and, if booked, a private massage |
This is the same itinerary behind our Lagos Luxury Relax Day tour where we pack up Meia Praia, Praia Dona Ana, Ponta da Piedade, Praia do Camilo and a private massage into one easy and relaxing day for 1 to 8 guests.
Where the wine comes from: Algarve varietals near Lagos
Most visitors, when asked about Portuguese wine, mention the Douro. But there are excellent wines being produced quietly in the Algarve by the fertile inland hills, which are cooled by the Atlantic breeze, all within a short distance of the coast. The wine villages of Lagoa and Silves can be reached in less than 40 minutes.
Look out for these regionally typical styles when you taste:
- Negra Mole, the traditional Algarve red grape, soft and light bodied.
- Arinto and Síria whites, crisp and mineral, ideal beside seafood.
- Boutique organic estates such as Monte da Casteleja near Lagos, which welcome small groups for cellar visits.
A short, curated tasting beats a rushed vineyard rush. Our Algarve wine estate experience pairs coastal sightseeing with a visit to a working winery, while our write-up on the Sagres cliff-top wine tasting at sunset shows how a single glass with a sea view can become the memory of the trip.
Wine-tourism specialist Winalist explains that the Algarve, renowned for its sun-drenched vineyards and unique wines, is a mere short drive from Lagos and underrated to say the least.
Ponta da Piedade: the golden cliffs at the heart of the day
This is a headland that a relax day would be incomplete without. The wind and water have formed the sandstone into arches, grottos and pillars that reach high above the turquoise waters, to a height of about 20 metres. It can be done on foot along the boardwalks on the clifftop, by kayak which is meandering through these caves with the operators charging for the hire around 23 euros for a running of an hour or so and finally by a short boat tour, usually run by local operators and priced around 23 euros for short runs of an hour or so.
The coast to the west of Lagos, towards Luz and Burgau, is equally beautiful, but less visited. We map that half day tour to the West coast of Algarve in detail on our Algarve Tour Guide. For official information for the broader area visit Visit Portugal and the encyclopaedic overview of Ponta da Piedade.
Private tour or self-drive? An honest comparison
Both approaches work. The right one is based on your budget, your group and the amount of planning you like.
| Factor | Self-drive / DIY | Private guided relax day |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower upfront, from around 23 euros for a boat trip plus fuel and parking | Higher, private tours from Lagos generally start near 250 to 400 euros per group |
| Wine | You cannot drink and drive | Taste freely, the driver handles the road |
| Effort | You research, book, and navigate | Everything is arranged in advance |
| Pace | Flexible but easy to overpack | Deliberately unhurried |
| Best for | Confident, budget-focused travellers | Couples and groups wanting true rest |
If you land at Faro or Lisbon first, a smooth arrival sets the tone, so many guests pair the day with one of our private airport transfers.
When should you plan a Lagos relax day?
The ideal window is April to May and September to October – the shoulder season. There are good temperatures for a swim around 12 to 22 degrees Celsius, good light for photography and the cliffs are much less crowded than during the hot summer months. It’s a mild winter, but hours are shortened, check before going to any wineries or boat operators. Sunset enthusiasts can enjoy our private sunset tour around the most South-western point of the mainland Europe; the Cape St. Vincent.
Frequently asked questions
From the town centre how do I get to Ponta da Piedade?
It takes about 30 to 40 minutes walk (south from Lagos marina), taxi or any private tour to reach here. The lighthouse is located next to the clifftop car park.
Near Lagos, there really are vineyards?
Yes. The small estates are located around Lagos, the Lagoa and Silves, with a few within 40 minutes car ride. Others like Monte da Casteleja concentrate on organic farming, and are open to visitors on a prior arrangement.
Would it be worth spending a private relax day?
For couples and small parties seeking rest, in general, yes. You don’t have to deal with the hassle and distractions of designated drivers, you won’t need to make a plan, and you’ll travel in an air-conditioned car with a local English-speaking driver.
Are there any vegan choices in Lagos wine shops?
Many do. More and more Algarve restaurants and estates now offer a selection of vegan options for wines and food, but it’s best to check in advance.
