Carvoeiro Itinerary: Hidden Gems & Secret Beaches Guide

Carvoeiro Itinerary: Hidden Gems & Secret Beaches Guide

Most visitors “do” Carvoeiro as an afternoon activity and then they’m off thinking it was just another pretty picture on an Algarve post card. That is a mistake. Fishing village turned into a destination not to be rushed, this well worth visiting Carvoeiro Itinerary in the municipality of the Lagoa deserves to be an unforgettable part of your tour to Portugal. A local, honest, day-by-day itinerary, focused around the secrets of the coves, cliff-walks, sea caves, et al, of which most guide books only touch just a feather.

Lagos Transfers & Tours (licence RNAVT 10239) is a western Algarve driving crew based in Lagos, established more than 10 years ago. All of this is of the routes that are run weekly.

Is Carvoeiro Worth Visiting?

Yes. The village of Carvoeiro is a wonderful place to visit for all it combines of the Algarve – fantastic scenery, incredible ochre cliffs, whitewashed houses, walkable town center and all for a very relaxed resort atmosphere as compared with surrounding towns. Compact enough to explore on foot, but still within 20 minutes of the beautiful beaches of Portugal, Seven Hanging Valleys Trail & of course Benagil Cave.

Best Time to Visit Carvoeiro

The shoulder seasons offer the perfect blend of warm weather, dining options and less crowd. It really is a great summer, but quite busy and getting a parking spot close to the beach is a challenge.

How to Plan a Trip to Carvoeiro From the USA or Canada

There are no direct long-haul flights to the Algarve, so North American travellers connect through Lisbon or fly into Faro Airport (FAO), the closest gateway at roughly 50 minutes by road. From there, a pre-booked private transfer is the smoothest option, no waiting for shared shuttles and no navigating unfamiliar roads after a red-eye. Our detailed Faro Airport to Carvoeiro transfer guide breaks down timing and costs, and you can reserve a fixed-price door-to-door ride on our Faro Airport to Carvoeiro transfers page.

It is better to rent a car if you would like to take your time to explore the coast, although ramps are usually full in town once it is after 10 am so aim to arrive well before the main rush.

A 3-Day Carvoeiro Itinerary With Hidden Gems

Spanning three days, color figures a list of sights to visit and local hot spots to discover. Extend it to four days with the nearby excursions extended below.

Day 1: The Boardwalk, Algar Seco & Boneca Bar

Enter in the heart of the fishing village. Go for a 570-metre stroll along Carvoeiro’s boardwalk overlooking the ocean, from the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação fort to Algar Seco. Easy, accessible and gorgeous during the golden hour.

At the opposite end there’s Algar Seco; a 1000 limestone tunnels, grotoes and sink holes carved by the Atlantic over thousands of years. Then head to two windows labelled “Boneca”, which enclose the sea perfectly, then on down to A Boneca Bar, nestled within the cliffs, for a cold beer at sunset. It’s the town’s “secret gem”.

Provide fresh seafood in the town centre. The specialties of the place are grilled fish and cataplana.

Day 2: Benagil Cave & a Small-Group Boat Tour

Benagil cave is the most photographed wonder of the Algarve just east of Carvoeiro, and is only accessible from the water. Carvoeiro’s little boat tours pass through little known crevices and caves until they reach the fabulous chamber in Benagil, with its circular opening in the ceiling.

Alternatively, for an active experience, kayak or paddleboard tours depart from the same beach and will show you secret caves along the way at your own speed. During the summer, dolphin watching trips are also available. Reservations are a must in the high season, you would have to book up in advance.

Prefer to see more of the coastline by land? Our best day trips from Lagos by car shows you the sea caves and the hilltop castles and viewpoints that are easy to get to from Lagos.

Day 3: Seven Hanging Valleys Trail & Secret Beaches

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) is a wonderful 6 km old-fashioned rock-climbing hike along the top edge of cliffs, nestled between Praia de Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha, one of Portugal’s most stunning beaches. In moderate walking, there are eroded valleys, sea stacks and a lighthouse to be visited at Alfanzina, which takes about 3-4 hours at a leisurely stroll.

Cool off after at a secret cove. Outside of high summer, Praia do Paraíso (via cliff-cut steps), and incredibly small Praia do Carvalho remain quiet. Both are situated near town but worlds away from the hordes.

Carvoeiro’s Best Hidden Gems at a Glance

  • A Boneca Bar carved into the Algar Seco rocks, an unbeatable sunset spot.
  • Praia do Paraíso, a secret beach just 350 metres from the busy main beach.
  • Praia do Carvalho, a small cove reached through a rock tunnel.
  • Vale Centeanes, a quiet beach and the trailhead for the hanging valleys.
  • Vale Covo viewpoint near the Tivoli, one of the best photo angles on the coast.

Where to Stay and Eat

The boutique cliff-top hotels like the Tivoli Carvoeiro have rooms overlooking the sea, while family apartments are grouped together near the principal beach. Dining is served at a table on the beach with grilled catch of the day—reserve well in the summer months. In recent years there has also been an expansion of vegetarian and vegan facilities throughout the town centre.

Extending Your Trip: Nearby Excursions

Carvoeiro is an ideal base for a wider Algarve road trip. Ferragudo, a genuinely sleepy fishing village, sits a short drive west, and the cliffs of Lagos and Ponta da Piedade are under 40 minutes away. Our private half-day West Algarve coastal tour links these highlights door-to-door, and this companion guide to the west-coast route explains what to expect. Browse every option on our private tours page, including a sought-after Sagres sunset tour.
