Quick reply: A Quinta Da Tôr wine-tasting is about 85 km from Lagos in the village Tor near Loulé. The drive takes around an hour on the A22. If you combine it with Alte, then you can enjoy a comfortable day on the inland. This usually takes between seven and eight hours.
Most visitors do not leave the coast. Most tourists only visit the coastline. The interior is another story. Between the coast, and Serra do Caldeirão is the Barrocal. A limestone belt of almond, carob, and olive groves, where temperatures drop and tour bus numbers thin out. The day is anchored by two locations: a family-owned estate producing some the most unique bottles in Southern Portugal, and a village with cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings that still look lived in.
What Is Quinta da Tôr, and Why Does It Matter?
Quinta da Tôr (family-owned) is located in Aldeia da Tôr Municipality within the Vinho Regional Algarve. The land belonged to one family between 1500 and 2011, when it was replanted by new owners. It is because of the combination between deep roots and recent reinvention that it looks different to a polished commercial wine cellar.
The regional climate is ideal for ripening seven different grape varieties here: Touriga, Síria and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s trademark bottle is Syrah, which reaches 17% in alcohol. This is one of the strongest Syrahs in Portugal. It’s no gimmick. It is an expression of how this heat affects fruit.
We had the best tasting bread, olive oil, and tapas in the Algarve. Portugal Activities publishes a guest review.
The estate is consistently rated 4.7 on GetYourGuide based upon more than 740 verified reviews. This is an unusually high score for a venue with this size.
What Happens During the Visit
The tour lasts 20 to 30 minute and covers family history, the production process and the history of the house. After the tour, four wines will be served along with homemade breads and estate olive oils. You can also add tapas to your order. The tour can be followed by a tasting before or afterwards. Guests can then enjoy a relaxing infinity pool with views of the vineyard and mountains. A surprising number of guests regret not having brought a suit.
Tasting Tiers and Prices
On weekdays, there is an additional 15:30 slot. The estate opens daily between 10:00 and 20:00. Closed 24-25, the 31st of December and 1st week in January.
| Tasting | Price | What You Try |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | €14 | Four classic wines, stainless-steel aged |
| Brave | €16 | One Brave wine plus three classics |
| Oak(y) | €19 | Two oak-aged wines plus two classics |
No need to make a choice in advance. The staff can help you at the time of arrival. During the summer months, there is a EUR15 minimum per person (aged four and older) that can be spent on wine or tapas. Please confirm current rates with your estate before traveling.
Why Add Alte to the Same Day?
Alte lies about 30 minutes northwest from Tôr. The village is often described as being the most authentic in the interior. Its two springs, Fonte Pequena (small) and Fonte Grande (large), feed the Queda do Vigário water fall, which plunges 24 metres into an underground natural pool. The trail starts behind the village’s graveyard. It’s short but slightly steep and there is parking nearby.
In the summer, the water falls often dry up completely. Visit the falls between November to April. For the village and its Moorish-style architecture, as well as shaded picnic areas, visit between spring and fall.
Order is everything. The village comes first, then the winery. No one wants to walk on a rocky track after four glasses.
How Do You Get from Lagos to Quinta da Tôr and Alte?
| Option | Time Each Way | Approx. Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private driver | 1 hour | Fixed quote per vehicle | Groups who want to taste freely |
| Self-drive hire car | 1 hour + tolls | Rental, fuel, A22 tolls | Independent travellers |
| Taxi | 1 hour | Metered, high one-way | Short single transfers |
| Public bus | 3 hours+ | Low | Not practical for this route |
Public transport is the weakest link. Alte is only accessible by bus infrequently and with many changes. It’s almost impossible for a full-day itinerary to be planned.
You can answer the self-drive issue by looking at what you will be doing on a given day. Portugal’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.5g/l. It is 0.2g/l for those with licenses less than 3 years. A four-wine taste test will push most people above that limit. It is not an extravagance to have a designated driving on this trip; it makes all the difference.
It is here that a Private Day Trip from Lagos makes a difference. Our Algarve and Boutique Wine Estates Experience operates on the same basis: hotel pick-up, one vehicle only for your group and a driver that handles tolls as well as parking and timing.
A Realistic One-Day Itinerary
- 9:00 Hotel pickup in Lagos. We can stop at a coffee shop en route, if that’s what you prefer.
- 10:00 — Arrive Alte. Cobbled lanes and Fonte Pequena. If water is flowing you can also visit the waterfalls trail.
- 12:00 Light lunch in village
- 13:45 — Arrive Tôr, near Loulé.
- 14h30 — English guided Tour, followed by your selected tasting with bread or olive oil.
- 15:30 — Relax in the pool lounge, or stop by at the estate shops.
- 17:30 — Returning to Lagos at about 18:30.
For those with more time, they often combine it with Silves and Monchique. If you’d prefer to remain on the coast, the Sagres Scenic Drive Guide and Full-day West Coast Route are good alternatives. The Carvoeiro Secret Gems itinerary also works as a second full day.
